Hospitality Management Internships: always a challenge

For our participants, professional internships are always the most interesting, most enjoyable but also the most complicated part of the training whilst getting to know a new country.

The world of work has changed and continues to change, we all want a job which is motivating, interesting, socially recognised and where we learn everyday. The work routine is not something we can eliminate in the long run but many employees leave as soon as they get bored. Our students are the same. Their work placements are their first contact with the world of work. They want to learn, have a good time, be very close to the General Director and take decisions.

But before everything, they have to pass selection process which is long, difficult and frustrating in a certain ways. The participant is faced with a reality: he/she is not the only student seeking a work placement and perhaps the ideal place is not feasible because of issues such as visas. The advantage which students on the European Internships programs have is that many young people on work placements work in the Hospitality Industry and the school is internationally recognised which means that many international channels open their doors to our participants.

Work experience in hotel management is going to be very very different to what students are used to, expect and imagine. The teachers have to be in permanent contact with the sector in order to adapt it´s programs and have up to date information at all times. At the same time, they have to be clear with what the students are going to discover or get used to in the coming months.

Many students are frustrated to discover that they are going to be the assistant of the assistant and not an assistant to the General Director as is noticeable in the emails received by the Human Resources department in various chains. This is when they have to think about it and understand that they are going to start at the bottom of the pyramid and not at the top. These days, it is also true, that some students obtain very interesting placements with many responsibilities even though they have no experience.

Some hotel chains have training programs which have been carefully studied and well organised, where the placement student receives a list of tasks and responsibilities as soon as they arrive at the company. But there are also companies where the student receives no help since the business considers them as just another employee. Both experiences are very interesting for the student although the difficulty is greater in certain occasions. The difficulty will be even greater if the work placement is carried out 10000km from home and you are carrying out tasks in Spanish, French or German.

These experiences will be the essence of your professional and personal future. The most important thing for the company is the attitude and performance of the student whilst he/she is doing the work placement. The world of work is very competitive and there is always someone around us who is better than us, who speaks more languages, who has more experience or more qualifications but perhaps these people do not have the motivation we do to learn, get to know and grow within the company. This is what businesses really look for today: people with “hunger to learn”.
