Interning at Hemingway: First Impressions

My name is Irene and I am on my third year of studies at University of Cyprus studying Primary School Education. After spending one year abroad with the Erasmus studies program I decided I wanted to spend a few more months working abroad and so the Erasmus placement program seemed like a good idea. They are offered by the European Union, similar to the Erasmus studies program, but the difference is that instead of studying you get to do an internship in another counrty and get a scholarship to help you to cover your expences.

It has always been a dream of mine to live in Spain and learn the language, so I started searching for internships in Spain. However, it was not very easy to find something. I sent many emails to many different organisations but only got a few replies. Then, I met a girl from my universtity who told me that she did her Erasmus placement in an Institution in Bilbao and she recommended it to me. I sent my CV to Instituto Hemingway and asked them if I could do my internship there and they accepted me immediately.

Before coming here I didn’t know much about Bilbao and the Basque country and so I started reading about it on the internet. It seemed like a great city, with beautiful landscapes, buildings, culture and history. I also met a girl from San Sebastian who showed me the traditional basque dances and tought me some words in the basque language. I fell in love with the basque culture immediately and couln´t wait to go there!

I arrived to Bilbao 3 days ago, and so far I like it very much. The weather has been great and the people are very friendly, helpful and understanding. The city is very beautiful and there are a lot of things to see and do. I feel that I have already improved my Spanish and that I finaly have the chance to use the Spanish I´ve learnt in school.

My main responsibilities will be to translate different articles and blogs on the Instituto Hemingway website, assist with the leisure activities that the school offers to it´s students and also to advertise and promote the school to potential students. I am sure that through this internship I will have the oportunity to grow profesionally and personally, gain new skills and knowledge. I will also get to learn how an organization or business is run.

To conclude, even though I am still at the beginning of my internship and I haven´t experiensed many things yet, I strongly recommend you to do an internship abroad. You will gain many things through it and of course a plus for your CV.
