Erasmus commercial and marketing work placement in Bilbao

Hola! My name is Ryan, I’m 21 years old and I’m currently on an Erasmus work placement, since I am on my year abroad of my degree. I’m from England and I’m studying Spanish and Economics at Durham University. Before coming here I spent 5 months in Salamanca at the Universidad de Salamanca as a student, but have noticed that my ‘castellano’ has improved in the 2 weeks I have been here much more quickly than my language skills were improving in Salamanca, probably due to working with native speakers. Something I quickly found out on my year abroad is that everyone in the world will try to talk to English people in English to try and improve their language level, however, the good thing about Instituto Hemingway is that everyone speaks castellano since we are a Spanish language school and are all here to improve it!

My role here has been hugely varied so far, from translating articles and blog entries to sending out marketing material via e-mail directly to potential or previous customers. An internship at Instituto Hemingway is also very autonomous, you are encouraged to brainstorm and suggest changes, and in my individual role I am more focused on the commercial side, which involves establishing partnerships with organisations such as secondary schools in the United Kingdom.

The staff here are particularly supportive of the interns, which provides a great mixture of experience and fresh ideas, but above all we enjoy working with one-another, and this can be seen on the daily excursions and normally on a Friday night when we all go out for a ‘pintxos’ tour, which are more or less Basque tapas. In that sense the job is a very social one, there is a nice-sized team so that everyone has their own responsibilities but that your particular needs are also recognised, you are not just a number here.

Additionally working at Instituto Hemingway as an Erasmus work placement is a great opportunity to see Bilbao, which is a truly unique city. The school offers plenty of guided activities but in Bilbao there are also many places to visit in your free time and to explore yourself. In short, a work placement here at Instituto Hemingway is going to vastly improve your Spanish and at the same time give you the chance to visit all of the cultural sites in Bilbao.

Come see for yourself, we are waiting for you!
