New interns with European Internships in Bilbao

A few weeks ago John and Dorothee, from England and Germany,  came to our European Internship company internship program. They are already fully integrated both into the internship and into Spanish life in Bilbao.

John is studying for  a degree in  Spanish and French; he also wants to do TESOL to teach English as a foreign language. Dorothee is training to become a language assistant in English, French and Spanish.

- How much time are you going to spend in your internships in Bilbao?

John: My year abroad involves 5 months working at Instituto Hemingway. Afterwards I have an internship in a different language school in Salamanca for 3 months.

Dorothee: I am working in Bilbao at Instituto Hemingway for about 3 months. Afterwards I would like to explore the Basque Country perhaps also visiting other regions of Spain.

- How did you find out about the European Internships program?

Dorothee: At the school where I am  training all students need to do  an internship of several months abroad, and the school has already taken advantage of this opportunity. I have also met other students who have worked at Instituto Hemingway and they recommended it to me.

John: My university advertised a lot of internships; but I was attracted to and applied for this post because I was impressed by the range of different tasks offered in the position and by Instituto Hemingway´s dynamism with the  endless number of free cultural activities.

- What types of activities are you carrying out in the company internship?

John: This internship involves a variety of tasks; Every day is different. As well as translating articles from Spanish to English I also write articles for the different websites and  organize excursions to cultural, musical, sport and gastronomic sites in the city. For example each Friday I take the students to a bar to eat pintxos (basque tapas) and last Monday (15th of September) we visited  Alhóndiga.

Dorothee: I also carry out similar tasks including doing translations from Spanish to German, writing articles and producing videos. I  also organize and accompany the students on cultural activities, for example on Thursday we went to Guernica.

- Is this your first experience in a work environment or have you done company internships before?

Dorothee: Yes, I have done some internships as a language assistant in an institute at my city´s university, but never for this amount of time. This is my first experience with a job environment abroad.

John: I have done some internships teaching English abroad in countries such as Senegal, China and Peru but they have not been as long as this.

- What do you expect from this European Internship?

John: I am expecting a lot of things from this European Internship. I want to not only  expand my social skills but also prepare myself for future careers.I am also looking to improve my commercial skills through gaining an understanding of the functioning of a Spanish company. I also want to increase my independence and improve my problem solving skills.

Dorothee: I hope that I can improve my knowledge of Spanish and of Spanish culture. Spending such a long time away from my country will also allow me  to develop my personality. Of course I also want to learn more about the world of work in Spain.
