European Internships´ marketing program: An intern´s experience

At Exeter University I study French and Spanish and as part of my course I have to carry out an internship abroad. Whilst looking for an internship on my university´s career website I found a marketing position at Instituto Heminwgway offered in association with the European Internships marketing internship program.

In this article I aim to consider why future interns should choose to complete this internship with Instituto Hemingway.

I have been working at the school for just over two months and I have already fallen in love with Bilbao and the job. In no other job would I have been able to gain so much experience in different fields than at Instituto Hemingway. In this one placement I have been able to work as a  receptionist, tour guide, administrator and marketing intern. Every day brings new tasks that I am able to get involved in from translating from Spanish to English or French to writing articles on events in Bilbao and at the school.

The job also involves leading , planning and organising cultural activities. This gives me the opportunity to become more confident in leading a group  and I am honing my research skills as I have to work out how to get to the activity, its timing  and its cost. I then need to communicate this information clearly to the participants to make sure that they turn up at the right place and at the right time.

As well as all of these abilities you will also be able to develop myriad of other transferable skills with an internship at Instituto Hemingway. For example you will be in constant contact with clients expanding your interpersonal skills as you learn to clearly explain information about the course and activities offered at  the school.

You will be able to become more organised and improve your time management as you prioritise tasks completing them to assigned deadlines.  Furthermore the job affords you a lot of independence as you choose the topics that you write on and the videos that you create.

The job provides a fully immersive environment as you will only communicate with your collegues in Spanish and you will be required to translate texts from Spanish to your native language  and to write articles in Spanish for the different websites.

The possibility to create articles will not only improve your fluency and confidence in Spanish but it will also stimulate your creativity and it will enable you to become a better writer as you learn how to compose coherent and cohesive pieces on a variety of topics.

Another factor to consider is that the  language school is small so when you start working in the office it is easy to get to know everybody.  There are also several breaks where you can socialise with your collegues and every Friday  the school organises a tapas tour attended by teachers and students so you will be able to make close friends with people at the school who you can explore Bilbao with in your free time.

Regarding free time the hours are very flexible and sometimes you will only work in the afternoon which gives you the morning  to improve your Spanish skills.

If you want a varied internship which gives you hands-on experience in an accredited language school investigate the marketing  internship programs offered by European Internships and ask about the possibility of working at Instituto Hemingway.  I highly recommend this post as my Spanish has improved in leaps and bounds and I am now thinking about looking for a marketing job in the future.
