My experiences as a marketing and communication intern in Spain
My name is Katie and I am currently an Erasmus student, interning at Instituto Hemingway. I study at Lancaster University in England for a joint honours BA degree in European Languages and Management Studies, and as the third year of my degree program it is compulsory to study or intern in the country of your chosen language, in my case Spanish.
At first I found it very difficult to find an internship or suitable job, and this led me to Universidad de Deusto La Comercial in Bilbao where I began to study Business Management. This was however not my chosen route and I was unhappy at the university, so I continued my search for internships, but this time concentrated on only Bilbao, as I was already settled here and had fallen in love with the city.
When I came across Instituto Hemingway I could tell that this was where I wanted to work, and I was thankfully offered an internship here. This internship not only offers me the opportunity to practice my Spanish, which is the primary reason for me being here in Spain, but through my job I also have the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life, and to practice my other European languages.
Every day is something different, and I am greatly improving my skills which will be invaluable once I have graduated and begin looking for work, such as team working and problem solving in a sometimes pressurised environment. My experience as an intern has been a very happy one so far, and I am looking forward to it continuing for the next seven months. I would definitely recommend an international internship to anyone who was interested, because it is indeed the experience of a lifetime, and not just an amazing learning experience, but it is also the biggest social networking opportunity you will ever have, as well as being a lot of fun.
