My experience as an intern in Spain
My name is Paulina Ratajczak and I am a Polish sociology graduate from the University of Poznań, currently study linguistics. At the moment, I am working as an intern as part of the Erasmus program at Instituto Hemingway in Bilbao. Having already been here for three months, I already feel very much at home here.
Before coming to Bilbao, I would never have thought of coming to the North of Spain. I have already travelled extensively in Spain, particularly in the South but the northern cities never captured my attention. To be honest, when I arrived here I was sceptical because this part of Spain is associated with a cold climate and miserable landscape. I had also heard that people from here are a little quiet and distant. During my stay however, I have realised that this isn’t true. I have made Spanish friends with whom I go out and enjoy myself whilst the city of Bilbao and the surrounding areas are beautiful. The city is comfortable to live in and offers many opportunities for leisure and culture, and the gastronomy is exquisite, “ You can’t leave without trying pintxos”, the Basque version of tapas.
Working at Instituto Hemingway, I have gained a lot of experience both professionally and personally. Thanks to Instituto Hemingway, I have met people from across the world, had the opportunity to practise the different languages I know and get an insight into working in Spain. Another positive aspect of working in the school is that it offers many cultural and social activities, not just for students, but also for interns.
The activities allow us to immerse ourselves in the popular culture of this beautiful region and to discover the extraordinary Biscayan art such as the unique types of sport. Overall, it is an enriching experience that I recommend without doubt; you won’t regret it!
