Hospitality management reviews in our program in Spain

Instituto Hemingway reviews with interns

To work in a service sector you need to be a “people’s person” as Hospitality Management means giving a service to a paying customer. The hotel I worked at was located in Barcelona

When I first arrived I was given a uniform and a pack and shown to where I would be staying. I immediately felt welcomed as soon as I walked into the hotel as all the staff were really friendly and nice.

I was working in a group of 6 other people all of similar age and was expected to do all types of jobs in the hotel. I started off working downstairs in the kitchen as >strong>my Spanish was not that good at the time, so I was put in charge of preparing the food and making sure the kitchen was clean at all times.

After a few weeks my Spanish started to improve so I was moved up in working on the front desk where I would greet guests arriving to the hotel and give them their keys and show them to their rooms. I was also help guests check out their bags and make sure their stay was enjoyable. I would also monitor the finances and all the bookings in and out of the hotel. This was enjoyable as I worked with numbers and figures and would be able to see if the hotel had made their monthly financial targets or not.

My favorite part in working in the hotel was when I was assigned to work as a waitress, even thought it was hard work and would be a long day it really improved my Spanish as I had to take peoples orders down and make sure their meal was what they had expected. I would also get to plan some special menus and set prices and orders with suppliers.

Hospitality management reviews are always positive with us.

Tasks that I managed to do throughout my 6 months while working at this hotel in their Hospitality Management scheme were:

• Making sure rules were being carried out when working in the kitchen.
• Making telephone calls and sorting out mail deliveries.
• Organizing and checking all beverage and food orders were correct.
• Keeping up to date with bookings for the hotel.
• Greeting customers on arrival.
• Dealing with payments made to the hotel.
• Working on a daily basis with people.
• Learning a language through the work.
