My experience as an internship in Bilbao
During my University break I wanted to experience something different and so I decided to come to Spain to improve my Spanish skills. In actual fact I study Landscaping Architecture in Dresden, Germany. I enjoy my studies a lot and I think it’s very important to know other languages. Although English is the most important global language, the world wide meaning of Spanish is definitely growing.
On the Internet I found a nice Spanish school, Instituto Hemingway, in Bilbao where I enrolled for one week of Spanish classes. The director offered me to undertake a 4 week-long internship afterwards at the school.
As an intern I translated news from the Spanish School into German, joined Spanish students on activities organized by the school, and helped to promote the business.
I enjoyed working at Instituto Hemingway a lot because of the familial atmosphere and it was fun to spend time with international students, as well as making new friends. At the Instituto people were welcoming and very interested in introducing us interns and students to their culture. I often took part in various activities and so I was able to see many different parts of Bilbao.
I experienced Bilbao as a very lively and up-and-coming modern city. As a student of architecture I have been impressed by the way new buildings fit seamlessly alongside older, more traditional buildings and I have been enchanted by the many little squares nestled in the old town; so typical for Spain. I got to know the Basque language and Spanish culture, whilst working with Spanish people and living as an intern in the city. In those five weeks I have been in Spain I never felt bored or alone.
All in all I can recommend the Spanish school, Instituto Hemingway, as a great place to do internships to anyone like me wanting to experience something different to their daily routine and to get to know the Spanish culture.
