Positions in hospitality management in Europe
Here is an overview of some of the positions available within the hotels on the Hospitality Management program. Depending on the hotel, you may be designated one role or you may be expected to be flexible and help out where you are needed.
Receptionist
JOB SUMMARY:
The hotel receptionist is the first member of staff that guests will meet and thus must be well presented, polite and friendly. The receptionist needs a very good knowledge of hotel procedures and the surrounding area in order to coordinate hotel services and answer any enquiries or problems which guests may experience during their stay. It is their role to welcome guests in person and on the phone; deal with check-in and check-out services, handle payments and carry out basic secretary functions.
DUTIES:
We offer different posts in the hotel and catering sectors. The most common are: waiter/waitress, concierge, receptionist, barman, cook and kitchen assistant.
- Welcome guests and handle their enquiries.
- Allocate rooms for new guests and ensure they are ready by liaising with housekeeping.
- Receive reservations for rooms either in person or by telephone, fax or email and be able to amend or cancel reservations.
- Provide an efficient and friendly check-in and check-out service to all Guests.
- Prepare guests´ bills and take payments whilst ensuring that Hotel credit policies are strictly adhered to.
- Answer all telephone calls promptly in a professional and polite manner; transferring calls and taking messages where necessary.
- Ensure that the reception area is clean, tidy and presentable.
- Have a good knowledge of the prices for all hotel services including any package deals, discounts or promotions which are offered as well as being aware of what is currently happening in the hotel.
- Provide tourist information to clients and make any reservations they require.
- Ensure that special notes/requests for guests are recorded and kept for future reference.
- Exchange currency / travellers cheques.
- Carry out admin tasks such as word processing, filing, opening mail and ordering office supplies.
- Liaise with airlines, bus companies and rental car agencies in making travel arrangements and finding lost luggage.
Waiter
JOB SUMMARY:
A waiter or waitress is responsible for serving the guests in the restaurant. They must be friendly and courteous in taking orders, delivering the food, taking payment and dealing with any problems that arise.
DUTIES:
- Greet customers, present them with menus, inform them of the daily specials; give recommendations when requested and be able to provide more information about the ingredients and preparation of dishes.
- Set the tables with the appropriate linen, silverware and glassware and keep the condiments and napkins replenished.
- Aid in the preparation of cold dishes.
- Take wine selections to the tables with the appropriate glasses.
- Take orders by writing them on order slips, memorizing them or inputting them onto the designated computer.
- Serve food and/or beverages to customers and prepare and serve specialty dishes at tables as necessary.
- Check with customers to ensure that they are enjoying their meals and act to resolve any problems they have.
- Take payment.
- Remove dirty dishes and glasses from the tables and take them to the kitchen for cleaning and clean the tables.
- Ensure that no alcohol is served to underage customers by checking identification.
Bar assistant
JOB SUMMARY:
A bar assistant prepares beverages in a skilled and professional manner and needs a friendly disposition. He or she must be vigilant in checking identification for underage drinkers.
DUTIES:
- Greet clients and take their drinks orders.
- Prepare beverages including cocktails.
- Handle payments.
- Keep the bar and seating areas clean and tidy.
- Deal with customers who have had to much to drink, in a careful and professional manner.
Chamber maid
JOB SUMMARY:
A chamber maid is responsible for preparing and maintaining the hotel. They must be presentable and considerate when cleaning guests´ rooms.
DUTIES:
- Make beds daily and change the bed linen.
- Vacuum the carpets, floors and upholstery.
- Clean the bathrooms and restock it with fresh towels and toiletries.
- Check and re-stock tea, coffee, sugar, milk and mini bar supplies.
- Make sure that televisions, radios, lights and other equipment are working.
- Report any articles left behind by guests, damage to rooms and any items which appear to have been stolen.
